Previously, we saw how Maharishi Valmiki asked Devarshi Narada who is that perfect man in this world, full of dharma, truth, compassion and valour. Narada was pleased and promised to tell him the story of that noble character. Now, after Narada's blessings, the tale moves forward, where a tiny incident is about to give birth to a great epic.
After listening to Narada, Valmiki worshipped him duly along with his disciples. Honoured, Narada took leave and left through the sky to his own realm. After he left, Valmiki reached the banks of the Tamasa river flowing near the Ganga. Seeing a holy and beautiful spot free of mud, he told his disciple Bharadwaja, child, put down the pitcher and give me my bark cloth for bathing.
Obeying his guru, Bharadwaja at once brought the bark cloth. Before bathing, Valmiki strolled in the forest and looked around. Then he saw a pair of krauncha birds near a tree, singing sweetly in joyful play. At that very moment a cruel fowler aimed without any enmity and killed the male bird. Drenched in blood, he writhed in pain, and his mate began to scream and weep in grief.
Seeing the struggling bird and the weeping female, Valmiki's heart filled with compassion. Judging it a grave injustice, drowned in sorrow he cursed the fowler, O Nishada, you have killed one of a pair lost in love, so you shall never find honour. As soon as he spoke he was startled, what has come from my mouth. Then he told his disciple, look, this sentence is bound in equal words and rhythm, it can be sung to the veena, born of my sorrow it shall be called a shloka.
Disciple Bharadwaja happily supported his guru's words, which gave Valmiki satisfaction. Then he bathed at that holy bank and returned to the hermitage thinking about the verse. Bharadwaja followed behind him carrying the water - filled pitcher on his back. At the hermitage Valmiki spoke of this and that on the surface, but the same metre kept echoing in his mind. Then, to everyone's amazement, the radiant four - faced Brahma himself arrived to meet him.
The moment he saw Brahma, Valmiki rose at once in wonder and stood silently before him with folded hands. He bowed low, offered water to wash his feet, gave him a seat and worshipped him. Seated on the honoured seat, Brahma asked after Valmiki's welfare and asked him also to sit. Even after sitting, Valmiki's mind stayed fixed in that sorrow, he kept thinking what a great sin the fowler had committed by killing for no reason the sweet - singing bird.
Lost in grief, Valmiki kept repeating the same verse in his mind and mourned for the female kraunchi. Seeing this, Brahma smiled and said, this metre from your lips will become immortal, have no doubt about it. By my own will this speech has burst forth. Now compose in this same metre the complete story of Rama. All that you heard from Narada and did not hear, about Rama, Lakshmana, Videha's daughter Sita and the rakshasas, even what Narada does not know will be revealed to you, and not one word of yours will be false.
As long as mountains and oceans remain on earth, your Ramayana will spread among people. And as long as this story is sung, you will dwell both in my world and in this world. Saying this, Brahma vanished on the spot, and Valmiki stood amazed with his disciples. The disciples began to sing that same shloka again and again, with its equal syllables, four parts and deep pathos. They said, now our guru will compose the whole Ramayana in this sweet metre.
Thus blessed, the graceful and greatly famed ascetic Valmiki bound the tale of Rama's dynasty in hundreds of sweet shlokas. Listen, the life story of Rama, noblest of the Raghu clan, and the tale of the end of ten - headed Ravana, composed by the sage in simple, melodious and rhythmic words. This is where the Ramayana is born.
